Moving House

Posted on by Elizabeth Shaw

Moving into a new home is one of the very special moments in life and one we don't do often. It's therefore important to make it feel like a magical experience and the start of something exciting and new. Here are our top tips for making your new house feel like a home.

The Move

The First Night Box

There's nothing more stressful than making it through the move to find that you've not got anything you need to hand. We think the idea of creating a 'First Night Box' is a rather ingenious way to get around this! Pack it full of all the things you may need for the very first evening: a set of plates and cutlery, a glass or two, phone chargers, a blanket to ward off any chill, perhaps a board game to keep you entertained and of course an emergency pack of Flutes.

Making a Home

The first few weeks in a new home can feel chaotic and disorganised so it's important to make it feel like your home as soon as you can. Here are some ideas for doing so:

Smell

If you have a particular air freshener or candle that you use at home, be sure to pack this near the top of your moving boxes so it's within easy reach. It'll smell like home in no time.

Pictures

Deciding where you're going to hang pictures is normally one of the last jobs when you unpack a life into a new house. However, it's a good idea to get a few up on the bare walls, even in temporary spots, to help your home to feel lived in.

Your favourite things

If your favourite way to pass the time is snuggled on the sofa with a glass of wine and a bite or two of chocolate, then be sure to set aside some time in the first week to do this in your new house. Getting back into a routine and doing the things you enjoy will help you feel more settled.

Gifts

If you know a friend or loved one who is moving house, it's a wonderful thought to help make their move as stress-free as possible. Here are a few of our favourite suggestions:

Personalised Print

Giving a personalised gift is an extra special way to show them that you care, as no-one else will have it! Choosing a house-themed print or creating a family poem will instantly help them feel at home in their new pad.

Box of Bits

Similar to our First Night Box, creating a Box of Bits to help them through the first few days will make their moving process a happy one. It could be a kitchen box with everything they need to create their favourite meal or a DIY kit so they can quickly get pictures on the wall and put together furniture. Whatever theme you make it, we think it's a delightful idea.

Chocolates

Sometimes all it takes to show your love is a carefully chosen selection of chocolates - and a beautifully presented box of Elizabeth Shaw Mint Collection never goes amiss! Especially when moving house.
