Random Acts of Kindness

'No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted' Aesop

February 17th is National Random Acts of Kindness Day, when we are all encouraged to reach out and share special moments with a loved one, the community or complete strangers. From giving up your seat on the train to sharing a bar of chocolate, there are an infinite number of ways, large and small, that we can help make someone else's day a bit brighter.

How can you get involved?

1. Pay the bill for someone behind you in the queue

When grabbing your daily coffee, or lining up to pick your favourite sandwich, ask the cashier to add a small amount onto your bill to cover the person behind you. Those unexpected acts of kindness will stay with that person all day - if not all week! It's an easy way to help turn a stranger's day around, and won't cost you very much in the process.

2. Share your time

Time is one of our most precious gifts, and choosing to share it with someone is the perfect way to help them feel special. Whether it's setting aside time to skype a friend, popping over to a relative's house for nothing more than a natter; sharing your time generously will be appreciated by all.

3. Donate your skills

An alternative to donating money is to donate your skills. Handy with a needle? Good at fixing bikes? Love story-telling? You can share them all! We all have skills and talents that other people will find helpful, and giving up your time to help out is an easy way to spread a little bit of kindness in your community. Take a look at Action for Happiness and see how you can help.

4. Give blood

It only takes half an hour, and it could save someone's life. It's a very simple, yet invaluable way to bring some kindness into the world. Head to the Give Blood website to find your nearest place to donate. www.blood.co.uk

5. Let someone know how special they really are

Whether you write a loved one a letter, leave a post-it note on the fridge or praise a colleague on their work, making someone feel special will bring a smile to their face, and you never know when they may return the kindness!

6. Share a bar of chocolate

Is there anything more delightful than receiving a surprise in the post? Why not nominate a loved one to receive a bar of chocolate on their birthday? If they are a lucky winner, we'll send them a bar of Elizabeth Shaw Chocolate to unwrap to help make their day a little bit more magical.
