Top 10 date night DVDs

Posted on by Elizabeth Shaw

Whether you know your other half like the back of your hand, or you're just discovering someone new, cosying up on the couch together with a good film is much more romantic than watching a movie in a busy cinema.

But what will the DVD du jour be? Here are my top 10 picks for just the two of you.

1. Jerry Maguire

This film proves that 'nice girls' do come first as Renée Zellweger wins the heart of a cocky sports agent (Tom Cruise). With an irresistibly cute little boy and the heart-stopping line 'You had me at hello', it's perfect snuggle material.

2. Amélie

Beautifully filmed and set in Paris, Amélie is the quirky, whimsical tale of a young waitress who is so busy transforming the lives of those around her, she almost misses her own chance of happiness.

3. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

What - a martial arts movie for date night? With breathtaking scenery, stunning costumes, unrequited love, and unbelievable fight sequences, there's plenty to keep you both happy.

5. Little Miss Sunshine

A family road trip to a children's beauty pageant is the unlikely setting for this unique film. It will make you laugh, cry and feel utterly grateful for your loved ones.

6. Up

This wonderful Pixar animation will have you reaching for the tissue box within the first 10 minutes! But it's also lots of fun and reminds us all to follow our dreams.

7. Moulin Rouge

A sumptuous feast for the eyes and ears, as Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor act and sing their hears out in this tragic love story set in Bohemian 1890s Paris.

8. Gone with the Wind

Romance doesn't get much more epic than this. It follows the life and loves of fiery Scarlett O'Hara, a wealthy plantation owner's daughter, whose will of iron proves to be both her strength and her undoing. At nearly four hours long, it gives you ample cuddle time!

9. My Fair Lady

A classic musical featuring the unlikely romance between a poor flower seller and an arrogant professor. Beautifully filmed, it won eight Oscars, including Best Cinematography and Costume Design.

10. Paranormal Activity
